PRESIDENT’S NEWSLETTER

LEE COAST CHAPTER of MOAA MEMBERS:  I am honored and humbled to be the new President of the Lee Coast Chapter.  I take up this challenge knowing full well we cannot accomplish our goals, objectives, and strategies without everyone’s help.  Over the involved years of my lifetime, which encompassed organized dentistry, community and public service, as well as 33 years (6 Active, 27 Reserve) in the US Navy Dental Corps, I have chosen to serve for the common good of all.  Oftimes, like you, I have been asked, “Why do you stay so involved?”  Perhaps a morning message I gave at our First Presbyterian Church in Batavia, NY entitled, “Volunteerism – The Lord Made Me Do It,” on Sunday May 5th,1996, might lend credence to ‘Service Above Self,’ our Rotary International’s eternal motto.  So you might get to know me a bit better, I have included a biographical summary for you to peruse:

RADM Roger W. Triftshauser, formerly of Batavia, N.Y., who now resides in Sanibel, Florida, graduated from Alexander Central School, Alexander, N.Y. in 1954, after which he attended pre-dental and dental school at the University of Buffalo, where he was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1961.  He then served in the United States Navy Dental Corps and upon release from active duty in 1967, he received a Masters Degree in Orthodontics from Loma Linda School of Dentistry, Loma Linda, California in 1969.  RADM Triftshauser’s total service with the United States Naval Reserve Dental Corps spanned 33 years.  He was selected for Flag rank in 1990, was promoted to the permanent grade of Rear Admiral on 1 March 1994, and retired from the Naval Reserve on 1 October 1995.  During his tenure as Flag Officer he attended the Naval War College, Army War College, and served as a member of the Secretary of the Navy National Reserve Policy Board.  He is the past Area 110 Coordinator for the United States Naval Academy, with over 200 area high schools under his jurisdiction.  Among his professional organizations, RADM Triftshauser is a member of the American Dental Association (ADA), in which he served as a Delegate, and as a Board Member to the New York State Dental Association.  He is the immediate past Chair of the ADA’s American Dental Political Action Committee (ADPAC).  He is a Past President of the Eighth District Dental Society and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.  RADM Triftshauser is the immediate Past Chairman of the American Dental Association Political Action Committee (ADPAC), Past President of the American College of Dentists, and is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.  Active in his community, RADM Triftshauser was elected for ten consecutive terms to the Genesee County Legislature, 1982-2001, serving as Chairman 1997-2001.  During this tenure he was elected as a Director of the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC), and served as President of the NYSAC Legislative Board Chairs for the 62 Counties of New York.  From 2001-2006 he was appointed by Governor Pataki as his Special Assistant for Intercounty Affairs.  He has served as President of the Batavia City School Board of Education, and is a past member of the Genishua Council of the Boy Scouts of America as well as the Rotary Club of Batavia, New York.  Presently he is the incoming President of the Lee Coast Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), and is a member of the Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club.  RADM Triftshauser is married to the former JoAnn Frances Novak of Attica, New York.  They have three daughters and one son: Gretchen, Kristen, Erin and Erik, and 11 grandchildren.

Of course, all who have served in the military know that our spouses make that difference, and my wife, who if I ever mentioned her name, would never forgive me, so I always spell it, JOANN, has been a 5 star mom who raised our four children, seven Rotary Exchange students, and me.  During my six years of active duty, again like you, I left JOANN for periods of six months at a time.  As well, time away was the plan-of-the-Navy during my 27 years with the Reserves.

Best regards,  Roger

Will you help?

The chapter has currently about 84 members, and would like to increase that number to about 100. We have extensive lists of ex-military officers with local addresses sorted by town. Please click here if you would like to work on the membership recruitment project.

And, if you know officers who don’t currently attend… Bring them to dinner.
